States have the ability to affect every aspect of childhood obesity–from transportation planning and health impact assessments to school wellness policies and physical activity requirements. Below is information about a number of resources that examine policies enacted and proposed at the state level. If you have information to share about policies in your state, please contact us.
- The CDC has developed a Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Legislative Database, which describes state-level bills related to nutrition and physical activity topics.
- The National Conference of State Legislatures has compiled a searchable Healthy Community Design and Access to Healthy Food Legislation Database. It examines legislation related to healthy eating and active living areas across all 50 states.
- Another important resource for those interested in state legislative activity is the annual report F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies Are Failing in America produced by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. F as in Fat reports on the status of obesity-prevention policies nationwide and makes recommendations for improvement. A supplement to the report includes a profile of each state, with details about its policies designed to reduce obesity. The 2008 F as in Fat report and the 2008 State Supplement are both available on the Web site of Trust for America’s Health.
