The center offers broad reaching, comprehensive technical assistance, designed to serve a range of diverse needs, in multiple formats and venues.
Targeted technical assistance offers numerous benefits including:
- conducting outreach to grantees and others to better understand current efforts in the field
- learning about innovative practice models
- identifying gaps in knowledge and research
- assessing capacity of groups to advance a policy agenda tracking local, state and national policy changes
The center recognizes the important contributions that have been made by those who have been engaged in childhood obesity prevention for decades. Therefore, a critical component of the center’s efforts to effectively facilitate, document and respond to technical assistance requests is reviewing and compiling existing technical assistance materials and engaging with existing providers to funnel requests to those who are best suited for responding.
Types of technical assistance
The center’s provision of technical assistance will include identifying and providing training opportunities, developing tools, webinars, curricula, material and other resources needed to support a wide range of requests as well as developing evaluation mechanisms to determine impact and outcomes.
Case Studies (view case studies)
The center will also utilize case studies to highlight relevant and timely promising practices from across the country for implementing policy and environmental change strategies to impact childhood obesity prevention. Case studies are especially useful tools in providing potential blueprints for success by profiling an initiative’s structure and evolution, challenges, success factors, and outcomes.
Toolkits (view toolkits)
Toolkits are collections of information, resources and recommendations for addressing issues pertaining to childhood obesity prevention. Toolkits are an important mechanism for providing technical assistance as they:
- Create easy access to general strategies for achieving policy and environmental change and
- Provide examples of concrete steps needed to achieve goals.
The center will actively promote toolkits developed by grantees related to the movement as well as develop toolkits, as appropriate.
Hands-on training
The center will also selectively provide limited hands-on training when a rapid response is called for in an environment ripe for significant change.
Delivering technical assistance is a primary step in strengthening and expanding the field and assisting in reversal of childhood obesity by 2015. Technical assistance resources will continually be updated to keep pace with the emerging needs of communities and other partners working towards this goal.
